Eye In The Sky - The Alan Parson's Project (the progressive rock band from 1982, not the giant "laser beam")
---------------------
Fact: The 1980's was one of the greatest decades for music. It was post-hippie, and pre-technology. They had to play instruments, and there was no autotune robot-assist voice. They had too much integrity to lipsync and screw their fans.
Milli Vanilli really pioneered the sleaze-bag phony stuff. But even they are a special exception, because I believe the real vocalists just felt that they weren't presentable and didn't want to be the face of the band... Blues Traveler did that at first too. When they came out of nowhere with The Run-Around, the video had some Counting Crows lookalikes on stage miming to the music. Pretty lame, they got crap for that, and they didn't do it again. I think everyone would prefer to see that back-woods fat guy singing, he's awesome. Also I think he lost like, 300lbs or something.

And, if you didn't get the giant "laser beam" reference, then you need to reevaluate your priorities.

Oh Flock Of Seagulls, nice. I can only really think of one song of theirs but it was amazing. It's on the Vice City soundtrack I believe.

80's were the best... but... just for music...and movies... you'd get tits and bush before the name of the movie had even shown... I'm thinking of Carrie... maybe that was late 70's... but I digress...

The plethora of independent labels which sprung up made for some truly innovative music in the eighties. The problem came when they were bought up by the larger labels and quite signing unique talent, finally dissolving.
The one single bad across a lot of the music of the time wasn't so much the synthesizers, but those damned drum machines.
Of course, most of the worthwhile experimental music still holds up.

That being said, I'll take even the bad 80's music, the cheesiest stuff, over the mainstream auto-tuned crap being made today.
Fortunately the major labels were stupid enough to waste their time fighting the inevitable with electronic distribution. They chose to sue grandmothers out of their retirement savings because one of their grandkids downloaded some mp3s on her computer... They should have recognized the market trends when Napster was big. They missed the boat and their days are numbered More..

I'll bet there's a treasure trove of stuff that never was mainstream you'd love if you came across it.
Today's "music" is formulaic because that is the only viable market which is profitable under the old system; mindless blather that is instantly familiar.
Yeah, there is nothing worse than that autotuned crap. As a gimmick, it was passe as soon as Cher used it. As a crutch, it's given us "artists" which are devoid of talent.
A computer and some freeware will provide a be More..

So what's you're opinion on Guitar Hero and all the subsequent variations that have come along? I keep hearing people complain that it turns kids off music, because it's not a real guitar... Doesn't make sense to me. I think those games (I only ever had the first one), could trigger a rock renaissance. The kids playing the game, would have never heard most of the tracks. I'm glad when kids are listening to ZZ Top and Heart and Bowie and RHCP and B.O.C., they might come to appreciate it.
I know More..

I'm with you on that one. One of my boy's friends has gotten massively into the Beatles as a result. The exposure is invaluable. Where else are they going to get it? Disney Channel is the scourge of society.
I drop a CD on in the car of new/old music and the kids talk and ignore, only picking up on the odd sounding bits, or lines. About a week later they're singing along and asking me to play a specific song. Every evening we have classical with dinner.
Of course, the games do lead to unreal More..

Another cool thing about Guitar Hero is that they created a new genre of music-games. There are already "games" made as a result that you plug a keyboard in to and learn to play piano.
