Gratitude of a Nation

On May 23, 2012, World War II veterans from South Carolina arrived in Washington DC to visit the WWII Memorial. Only moments before, the area was fairly empty and quiet until the gate attendant invited travelers to help welcome the vets.

  • I CONSIDER IT AN HONOR TO LIVE IN THE SAME COUNTRY AS THESE MEN.

    • @DFTERC Would it not also be the case if you lived in any other country?

U.S. involvement was relatively small to other countries, but our Jews made lots and lots of money in that war.

So, let's be grateful to all of them.

  • Thank you! Voted. Thank these guys when you get a chance, unfortunately their numbers are dwindling fast. They announced the last Pearl harbor survivors gathering was their last. I felt sad when I heard that.

    • @Steinagus Yeah, I saw a big write up on that in the Stars and Stripes.
Some of the children were trying to carry it on but, it's of course not the same.
It is the same with my father, Paratrooper into Normandy. They are few. My Dad is retired Army Colonel 35 years. He's 94 and still going, not real strong, but still plunking along. I tell him he's too mean to die, Heaven doesnt want him and Satan is afraid of him. He always laughs on that one.
Sadly to say. Im retired Army as well. Many of ou More..

Please tell your dad that millions of us consider him and his fellow warriors heros and we would personally thank him if we could. Bless him.

    • @tat2d Thank you and thank your Father so much! True heros to me! My friends Father was also a paratrooper into Normandy. He was wounded and put up in a french families house. The little village named a road after him, .."Hochadel Lane". They went back for a reunion many years later, and there it was. Greatest generation!

    • @Steinagus My siblings and I sent our Dad as a gift, to the 50 year D-day Reunion. My brother and I, are both retired Army and offered to go with him. He wanted to go alone.
The French people treated them like Kings. Small children knew who the soldiers were because they were taught about the "Heroes" from America.

  • This is a wonderful Project by the V.A. and Veterans Club. They fill a plane with WWII vets from each state and take them to DC. My father 94 years old. Ret'd Colonel went last year. He still gets around, but it was hot and lots of walking and they planned a wheel chair for him along with some of the others. Each man in chairs had a active duty Assistant from their Branch of service waiting on them. The Old Bird had a very nice time.

    • @tat2d Actually this project was created by Honor Flight. Different groups sponsor the WW2 vets and act as guardians. I am with a Rotary Club in Florida and have been on two flights to Washington as a guardian. It is amazing to see, how many other travelers, boy and girl scouts and other groups welcome our Vets in this way, all day long. On top of that Senator Dole and his wife are at the Memorial every Saturday visiting with WW2 vets.

    • @klaus123 Oh yes, that is the name. We, well they in Ohio had several go. I have all the tapes of My Dad and his group. Very nice. Even though it was emotional for him, he also had a ball. I am tickled that they are doing this.

    • @tat2d glad your Dad was able to go. Our oldest vet was 94 year old and out lasted everyone on the plane. Those guys are amazing. Our trips usually start at 2.00 am and stop right around midnight. You would think, that these vets would be tired, but NOOOOO. The guardians are the once in need of wheel chairs. This is an amazing program and very well organized.

  • Awesome! We owe these Gentlemen literally everything.

I'm so glad my Uncle Joe got to take an honor flight to D.C. and see the monument before he passed (Saipan and Iwo Jima vet). He was very impressed with the monument and very grateful for having been invited to go.

  • WW2 vets went through hell and back. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. My grandfather was a Brazilian Air Force pilot bombing German U-boats. We can never thank them enough for their bravery, honor, and sacrifice. It takes one hell of a man to run into fields of bullets and bombs flying everywhere and hitting everything.
