Warm climate brings out DC cherry blossoms early

In previous years, Critical Mass bike rides on the first Friday of April always went to the Cherry Blossom Festival. This year, the unusually warm winter has brought the cherries out so early that it is feared much of the centennail Cherry Blossom Festival will be too late, and the blossoms will be gone.

Even with the Critical Mass also moved up to the last Friday in March (March 30), I feared the Cherry Blossom Critical Mass would also miss the blooms, so I went to Hains Point to shoot this footage while it was still posssible.

In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize the impermanance of life, due to their very short lifespan and consummate beauty. I just hope the early flowers don't symbolize the impermanence of a stable climate.

All the plants and trees that flower in the spring are coming out earlier on average from year to year due to climate change. Some may soon miss their pollinators as a result. The Cherry Blossoms coming out prior to their festival are just one very spectacular example of this change.

  • Absolute crap.

You are talking about weather not climate.

There is a huge amount of natural variation, year to year, decade to decade.

Look up ENSO and Pacific decadal oscillation.

    • @DEADBEEF It is the year to year average that has been advancing, which means the early years get earlier, causing the pollination issues in those years. In addition, variability of climate is increasing as theory predicts. This year's winter actually is a case study in the increased variability of climate that comes with higher CO2 levels. The unusually warm winter in DC and tornadoes elsewhere were two manifestations of this.

  • How unusual for plants and tree's to bloom early or late. (not).

Ignoring the global warming utter bullshit, the cherry blossoms are absolutely beautiful. Such a pity they were not celebrated with better music.

    • @TheMonkeyOnYourBack I regard Gore, like the rest of the Dems, as a talker, no a doer. Would he raise the gas tax to cover 100% of Federal highway spending? Would he force coal burnng utilities to pay back 100% of the life cycle costs of using coal, including property damage caused by mountaintop removal coal mining? Doing things like this would make fossil fuels economically uncompetitive-and THAT would make campaign cash from business hard to get.

    • @dcdirectactionnews lol make fossil fuels economically uncompetitive? Then we would have to walk? Because there is certainly currently no viable realistic alternative. And all this does is make the sellers of the useless energy sources, like solar and wind.Rich! And who do you think is invested heavily in those? Why Al Gore of course!

    • @TheMonkeyOnYourBack The REAL "monkey on our backs" is addiction to dirty energy that is guaranteed to run out sometime

Solar and wind are not useless when you are standing atop the ruins of destroyed mountains, stripped of all coal, and the lights are out.

Solar and wind are not useless when you want lights for your new home on the new shoreline, and all the oil and gas are gone, and the only light from nuclear is from glowing piles of radiactive waste,
