In previous years, Critical Mass bike rides on the first Friday of April always went to the Cherry Blossom Festival. This year, the unusually warm winter has brought the cherries out so early that it is feared much of the centennail Cherry Blossom Festival will be too late, and the blossoms will be gone.
Even with the Critical Mass also moved up to the last Friday in March (March 30), I feared the Cherry Blossom Critical Mass would also miss the blooms, so I went to Hains Point to shoot this footage while it was still posssible.
In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize the impermanance of life, due to their very short lifespan and consummate beauty. I just hope the early flowers don't symbolize the impermanence of a stable climate.
All the plants and trees that flower in the spring are coming out earlier on average from year to year due to climate change. Some may soon miss their pollinators as a result. The Cherry Blossoms coming out prior to their festival are just one very spectacular example of this change.
