Some folks thrive on being jerks. That's his right.

Pullman wrote, among other things, "The Golden Compass"-- an atheistic fantasy work which amounts to an sort of anti-Narnia. Derivative stuff whose movie version was such a disappointment that it led to the demise of New Line Cinema.
