If I remember correctly...putting a fire base at the bottom of a valley is a extremely stupid way to defend yourself?
I would like to sit down with our generals and take 2 minutes of their precious time ask why?

I think they said something that they put the bases on the bottom too draw out the Taliban so they will attack,Pretty effective,But stupid way too waste soldiers.

Oh. I'm pretty sure the Taliban would attack our boys regardless of whether they were at the top of the mountain or not.
Stupid generals are putting them at much more risk by using this tactic.
No excuse for this.

And i agree with you,I do not understand it eaither,They should bring charges on the Generals when the soldiers die,Because it's their fault they die when they are in stupid positions.

That was the first thing that popped into my head when I seen their location. However look at the design of the houses they are next to. My guess is that was a previous Taliban hideout and not something our men built. Still a horrible decision keeping our soldiers there, it will be a bad day if mortars start flying over those hills and they have no idea where the hell there coming from.

Maybe the camp is located where the logistics can still reach it. Close to a road or a landing zone. Limited access on a mountain could also pose a real problem plus you cannot fly in everything via chopper.

Superb post again Ghastly. Still don't understand the logic of setting up camp in a location like that. I has to be a deliberate attempt to draw the stinking rag heads into a fire fight, which they will inevitably loose.

one bolt action rifle equiped with a thermal scope would be much more effective than all those machineguns shooting randomly into the hills... what a waste of ammo and money.

It's called covering fire... while the snipers scope out their targets and the mortar-men make their firing solutions.

And you don't think suppressing the enemy while your sniper team moves into position is a good tactic. Please tell us the whole story of this firefight since you were there. I am very interested to hear your first person account of this event...
I'll be waiting...

Looks a bit staged. Like some overacted target practice.
