Cicadas swarm once every seven years. Last year was cicada summer. I did a couple of yoursays outdoors talking about other stuff and not thinking about the bugs at all. But the commenters wanted to know what the hell was going on in the background making all that racket. It was the cicadas.

@john1054 I swear these things only hit Toronto every bunch of years too, I haven't heard them in YEARS until this year. Everyone thinks I'm fucking nuts!!

@gatcontrol ....they come out every year in our zone.... maybe in toronto there is less places for them to survive... The cicadas here hatch, then stay underground for 16 or 17 years. After feeding on tree roots all that time they come out for a few months in the summer, breed and die... Many of them get paved over in that time with new houses and roads being built, and there is less and less every year

@Jroc2877 I think the cicadas we find here in Ontario are a different species of cicadas. The famous ones in Southerh France are apparently much larger and make more noise the smaller ones that live here.

Apparently they're good to eat too. If I was close to starvation I'd eat a few hundred of those things no problem

Love those things. Sound of summer. That little guy is probably older than most the kids in the video. 17 years in some cases.

@Blank Reg I can remember catching those things as a kid. Truly one of the sounds of summer as you say. Great memories.

when these things get around the backyard the noise is so goddamn annoying. sometimes i throw rocks up into the trees to get'em to shut up but they always start back up 10 minutes later. i was happy one day when i saw a huge wasp rip one down from a tree. he wrestled it around on the ground and then ripped its belly open and ate its insides out. too bad i didnt get it on camera.
