CCTV Shows Pedestrian's Lucky Escape

A man had a miraculous escape yesterday after an ambulance smashed into a bus stop – and sent him flying through a giant pane of glass.

Shop workers found the victim lying in the debris moments after the crash, which happened as the vehicle responded to a 999 call.

The man, who appeared to be in his 60s, and the paramedic driving the ambulance walked away from the scene of devastation with just cuts and bruises.

Locals say the bus stop has now been crashed into THREE times in three years.

On the previous occasions, buses clipped the top of the shelter in Causeyside Street, Paisley, leaving it needing repairs.

But after yesterday’s accident, only a mangled wreck remains.

CCTV video footage from inside a butcher’s shop next to the bus shelter shows the impact at 10.20am.

The man is seen hurtling through the air as the glass explodes. Another man runs out into the road to avoid the impact. A woman walking past the stop just avoids the crash and is seen falling into an advertising board.

Jim Peacock, a partner at the butcher, WM Phelps, helped pick up the man from under the debris.

The paramedic was able to climb free from his vehicle and help the man inside the butcher’s. The paramedic phoned for another ambulance, which arrived minutes later.

Jim, 40, said: “We heard the siren getting louder and then an almighty crash. I found the guy lying in a pile of glass and the ambulance through the front of the bus stop.

“There was glass all over the poor guy. We had to brush it off his head.

“He’d been carrying a bag with some cans and a bottle of vodka in it. Surveying the mangled bus stop, Jim added: “He’s dodged a bullet there.”

Eyewitnesses said the Honda 4x4 ambulance had its siren on and was overtaking on the town centre street when the accident happened.

A blue Renault Megane, travelling in the same direction, then tried to turn right in front of the 999 vehicle.

The ambulance swerved to avoid the Renault but clipped the front of the car and hit the bus stop.

Jim said the woman who had been driving the Renault came into the shop to see if the man was OK.

The man, the woman and theparamedic were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for check-ups.
