Syrian Civil War Threatens Destruction of Ancient Aleppo

Until recently, Aleppo, Syria was a vibrant destination, attracting tourists to its famous souk, an eight-mile marketplace, and to the Citadel, one of the oldest castles in the world. But as violence has increased, the city's ancient and cultural landmarks are the next casualties of the Syrian Civil War. Jeffrey Brown reports.

  • Lebanon used to be a nice place too, before the Islamic militants crawled out of the woodwork. The whole region is becoming one big rubble heap.

  • The Souk was burned deliberately by the terrorists. Just in the past few days the women's Souk was deliberately torched by the terrorists as well.

The reason for destruction is simply the terrorists want to destroy anything that is unislamic. Private enterprise markets are certainly unislamic to the terrorists.

    • @DirtyUncleBerty Oh please. Don't attack all of America becasue of one comment. A lot of US Soldiers died in world wars protecting sites of antiquity. Taking casualties while Germans fought from holy places in Italy and elsewhere.

    • @DirtyUncleBerty I know. Didn't say otherwise. America still looks to their history in war with their allies and celebrates the bravery of people they have fought with. British are depicted in our media with nothing but admiration for their stubborn defense while other countries fell. The French Resistance and more. Again, I'm just saying that you don't have to demean our entire nation over a single comment. America is young compared to Europe, I'll concede. I've traveled Germany and Ireland and More..

  • So sad! We are here for a moment and so have no right to touch such places. Anyone wanting a fight should go and do it out in the desert

  • Mr Rao from UNESCO is blaming Syria for not protecting the ancient sites? Not a fan of either side but this seems a cheap shot considering the rebels are the ones attacking it because of the government forces there defending it.

And above all else, an armed force protects their soldier from the kinetic actions of their foe. You're not going to let your troops die because someone is holding hostage to a landmark. Sad to lose some history, but that is war.

But really, just when you think the si More..

  • It's not a civil war! This is simple sectarian violence. Enough with the BS that this is somehow a just and moral fight.
