Geddy Lees' "Bonus Years"

Broadcast Date: Feb. 26, 1997

In 1997, Rush is one of Canada's most successful bands, selling some 35 million albums worldwide over a career spanning nearly three decades. In February that year, the trio – drummer Neil Peart, guitarist Alex Lifeson and vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee – receives one of the country's highest honours when they are invested as officers of the Order of Canada. In this CBC-TV interview, Lee says that given how long the band's been around, he considers Rush to be in its "bonus years." Performing, he adds, is still his favourite part of the job.
Geddy Lee's 'bonus years'

• Rush was founded in Willowdale, Ont., a suburb of Toronto, in 1968. Drummer Neil Peart joined in 1974, replacing John Rutsey shortly before Rush's first U.S. tour.

• Geddy Lee was born Gary Lee Weinrib. However, his mother – a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to Canada – pronounced her son's name as Geddy, and it stuck.

• Rush's music is most often described as "progressive rock." In 2005 Entertainment Weekly magazine (noting that Lee "sings like a duck from planet Zerfnog") voted the band's 1981 album Moving Pictures second in a list of five essential prog-rock albums.

• In 1975 Rush won a Juno Award as best new band. They have won six Junos in total, and in 1994 were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

• Lee is a devoted fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and can often be seen in his seat behind home plate during televised games.

  • they performed on colbert report, they played tom sawyer (of course) but I was amazed to see not only how much they sounded dead on for live, but also never realized how awesome their singer is at not only singing, but also playing bass and keyboards.

  • Nice work CQ.
Now that we are in our "Bonus Years", wouldn't it be an honor to share the music of Rush with our children and grand children? The experience for them would a life long memory as it was for a lot of us.
    Thanks for sharing.

From the copy and paste king. lol.

  • He is on my short list of "Jew's I like"

The guy plays the bass, the pedals and sings ...he's on a different playing field

Rush is still one of my favorite bands ...in fact I was on a plane and we just got the OK to break out the iPod's and I was rocking to Rush, a lady in the middle seat tapped me on my shoulder and asked that I turn it down ... I've since changed to Bose headphones ..

  • Not a particularly good interview.. "what kind of gestures do you like to do to the audience". Yeah. I don't think Geddy was connecting in any way to this guy.

Look up the CBC interview on Q (jian ghomeshi)... a much more insightful look at Rush.

If you have never seen them live, you must see them.I saw them for the first time in 1982 or 83 when they toured for their album SIGNALS.I was blown away and have not missed a tour since.I have seen them 28 times at 7 different arenas.Rush is one of the few bands that is worth the price of admission. The first time I saw them it only cost $7.50,the most recent cost $85.00.
    Peace
