The Ford That Beat Ferrari Sells For US Record $11 Million Dollars

It's Official! Highest Price Paid for an American Car in History.. The acquisition of GT40 P/1074 represents a special opportunity. Aside
from its current, stunning presentation, the fact that it is one of only
two surviving Gulf Mirage M1s, in which form it accumulated much of its
racing history, renders it particularly attractive to an enthusiast who
now has the option of relatively easily returning the car to this
configuration and actively campaigning the car with its remarkable Jacky
Ickx provenance.

This car’s impeccable credentials, both as a winning racer and as the
camera car for the legendary Steve McQueen film Le Mans, as well as its
long documented history of prominent owners and its meticulous
restoration in J.W.A./Gulf livery, mark it as one of the most desirable
GT40s, and indeed endurance racing cars, ever built.

  • As a car lover and a huge Steve McQueen fan, this is one of the best racing car ever built. That was the best response from Ford as Ferrari backed off to sell his company to Ford.

Also, McQueen wasn't driving the GT40 in the film "Le Mans" but the Porsche 917 with a chassis from Lola, designed and built in Bromley and Slough, England.

  • Just watched the Meekum auctions this past weekend, unreal the history of these vehicles, and unreal the prices some of them being auctioned off have been sold for. Ford was hell bent on taking down Ferrari to the point of bringing Shelby in to assure that. Awesome vehicles

  • i love the car, but 11 mil? seriously?

    • @morningwood
Yup. Originally, RM auctioneers only estimated the classic racer to reach upwards of $8 million (€6.5 million). After a fallout of many bidders due to an inflated price tag, two bidders continued on raising the price from $9 million (€7.3 million) to the final $11 million (€8.9 million) purchase, not including auction house fees.

This $11 million price tag now holds the record for most expensive American car ever sold, beating out last year’s big name Duesenberg Model-J Lo More..

    • @Fire37Rescue $11 mill sounds like a lot but an A ticket entertainer easily drags in $40 million a year with the average income for the elite 2% being over $80 million a year. So for them this is small change to own a serious bit of motoring history.

  • Low results in race, overpriced* GT40 (and i like GT40 mk's as much as Ferrari 250GTO).
*Recently a lot of supercars are overpriced due to the fame of their former owners.
But how to not fall in love for a gulf...

    • @Punch_The_Monkey avoid the Ford made re-run from a few years ago, they are a total piece of junk with electrical problems being a regular issue.

    • @Punch_The_Monkey Since few years u can have "no replicas" GT40s rebuilt from different parts/chassis number (same with the most prestigious Ferrari)...
