The Coalfield Xpress is a proposed highway in the mountains of Virginia that is planned to be built by strip-mining mountains for coal, then building the road over razed mountains. On the 5th of December, outraged residents of surrounding areas showed up in front of the Federal Highway Administration demanding the permit be blocked.
When a speaker asked how many of the protesters lived in Virginia, all but a few supporters from the DC area raised their fists.
The highway was originally proposed over 20 years ago along another route-and dropped. It was considered to be of little benefit and too expensive. Now the coal companies have brought it back, rerouting it to follow coal seams and planned as a vehicle to open a series of mountaintop removal coal mines. These mines would raze the mountains and the highway be built over the ruins.
