Well shit, you take a bunch of kids 18,19,20 who don't care about some war going on and they get drafted, get a letter in the mail that says show up, you're going and WTF is to be expected?
They get stuck in the middle of a jungle somewhere when just a few months ago they were home trying to get into their girlfriend's pants in the backseat of their GTO at the drive-in and now they are surrounded by people with automatic weapons defending their country and desperately trying to kill them.
