HELO EXTRACT UNDER HEAVY TALIBAN FIRE

Summer 2011, Approximately 40 Marines from Lima Co. 3rd Battalion 4th Marines are dropped off by two CH-53's in the 'green zone' in Helmand province to check out a few suspect buildings. During the wait for the 53's to pick us up the Taliban set in all around our position and waited for the helicopters to return. As you can see it took two tries for the pilot to actually land because the LZ was too 'hot'. The whole ordeal lasted about 3.5hours.

Brave guys those chopper pilots, gunner too. However could've done with an Apache providing cover, or failing that in the intervening hour and a half before they came back some fast air maybe or artillery support if they were close enough?

@Gorilla True, but that ain't a Sea King. It's a Super Stallion. Those two Sikorsky birds may look similar at a glance, but the Super Stallion is about twice as long and three times heavier. An SH-3 is like a booger next to the mighty CH-53E.
Which, of course, makes it even more hilarious that they didn't take fire, given that the CH-53E presents a much larger, more tempting target than most transport helos.
