The Gearbox, Spinning Levers..

'how reliably our spinning levers work in our automobile's transmission', exclaims the narrator in this superb late 1930's Chevrolet explanatory film of the gearbox and how their engineers worked tirelessly to produce a smooth easy to shift mechanism that makes their cars the ones to buy!

great practical explanations as to how the power is actually transferred through the shafts and gear-wheels for those of us who aren't too sure as to what goes where - and why... plus, how the synchromesh gears work to produce seamless and efficient shifts of gear. This was really cutting edge material for the day and includes shots of now classic automobiles and city streets.

  • The really sad part is today's crop of young people are not only dis-interested in technically inclined information such as this. They also for the most part cannot comprehend mechanical fundamentals or similar technical topics. All they can do is slide their fingers across the screen of their iPhone or Android texting useless gibberish to each other. Finally just try and find a Gen-Y young person today hat can operate a manual transmission all they know is P/R/D.

  • First , very informative added to favorites to show my son.

Second , how many people here have driven a three speed on the floor as well as three on the tree. I learned on a three on a tree and my first car "VW" three on the floor.

The first manual I drove was a late 40s pick-up with three on the tree. It was early in the morning and a friend and I were out drunk looking for nothing in particular to do when we stumbled across it...the keys were in it...I stole it!! (the only vehicle I ever stole so don't get too angry). Found first and off we go! Five minutes later it was upside down in a field!!! DAMN!

    • @mytwocents I hope you learned a valuable lesson that day! like how to drive a 3 on a tree ;) but really, I am kind of ashamed that I have never driven one, maybe someday! but the longer i wait the lower my chances get as they are disappearing!

Learned many lessons actually, like how heavy my buddy's fat head is when it hit mine, and how crazy he was to stay in the upside down truck with gas pouring out like mad so he could collect the beer! OH and don't steal. Never did get the three on the tree, that was my only opportunity.
You ain't missing much from what I remember!
      Cheers!

Cheers to not fixing cars at 85!!
Because we don't want to, not because we can't!

  • Archimedes actually said "Give me a lever and a place to stand and I can move the world" -and he would have said that in ancient Greek. Also, I always wondered how they syncronized gears. That was VERY informative :)

  • Man, you find the coolest stuff cleaner! It amazes me how much is still the same, except for the synchronized 1st and reverse now it is still pretty much the same!
