1980 Crash Test Results: Fiat Strada & Chevy Chevette best...?

I wrecked a 1980 Chevy Chevette (one of four Chevettes I've owned) horribly in 1986. I lost control and hit the concrete divider on a curvy part of the highway.

The car was absolutely totaled but started back up and got me home before the police arrived (I was 22 and a wee bit lit, and could only find 3rd gear. Worked that clutch. Luckily, I was within a mile of home). I was uninjured, but inspection of my blue little C-vette the next morning was nothing short of amazing. The entire front end was shoved about a foot towards the passenger's side, the battery was smashed (but still, apparently, held some charge), and the radiator demolished. It would never start again =(

I also had a 1976 Fiat Miafiori 131s... never wrecked that one, but it was a ton of fun.

  • This reminds me of that Test Track ride in Disney World. Awesome ride.

  • I hate it when I do that! Been in three rollovers and Two Motorcycle Wrecks that should have killed me. One put me in a comma for 12 weeks.

    • @xdeadhead I guess when I had to pretty much learn everything over. I missed a few things. Looked them up, true so true. Lesson learned. Don't have to hit me in the face to get my attention.

  • Unfortunately Fiats could rarely move fast enough for these kinds of tests.

Sadly, neither could the Chevette. Both terrible cars, for many other reasons beyond crash tests. A buddy of mine up at Chico State bought a old cabin near there after college. Had a Chevette in the front yard. Whole tree was growning out of the engine compartment, and they made a planter box out of the back end. Best use I ever saw for one of those cars.

Haha... true enough. But that 131s had spunk! DOHC and regular leaded gas baby!

      "Sadly, neither could the Chevette."

It never was built for speed... fuel economy was it's main selling point. But it was also fun, if you knew how to drive it.

First clutch I ever replaced was on that '80. Good times.
