The Panther was the German response to the excellent Russian T-34 tank. The first Panthers were very trouble prone, having problems with engine fires, broken road wheels (the number of wheel bolts was doubled on later models), and many other fatal flaws.

Eventually the Panther's technical troubles were worked out, but too late to affect the war. About 5,000 Panther tanks were built by war's end.
