Moment in which the fire started in F1 Williams Garage, Barcelona, - 2 Videos

Seems due to an electrical problem with the KERRS system, it was a small explosion then fire, some minor/moderate burns on 3 ppl maybe and smoke inhalation. Nothing more serious actually.

  • A kinetic energy recovery system (often known simply as KERS) is an automotive system for recovering a moving vehicle's kinetic energy under braking. The recovered energy is stored in a reservoir (for example a flywheel or a battery) for later use under acceleration.

    • @Fire37Rescue just to add man, the batteries store up to 60Kw of energy of which the driver can release this energy by pressing a button on the steering wheel giving him an extra 80BHP for the time he has the button pressed. They are restricted to about 7secs a lap of KERS which can be used all at once or in small doses throughout the lap. It makes driving in the wet a lot more difficult due to the harvesting of the energy through the rear wheels under braking.

If you've ever see a recent graph More..

    • @Gimpo
Very cool. Thanks for that.My question is, how does stored electrical power get converted to power a gas piston engine? Is there a second electrical engine output?

    • @Fire37Rescue Good question, either by a flywheel powered by the harvested energy which is connected to the engine when KERS is activated by the driver or the harvested energy is stored in batteries and when driver activates KERS it powers an electrical motor connected to the engine. When KERS was introduced in 2009 i think all but Williams F1 team went down the battery/electrical motor route (Not sure if this is still the case). Theres pros and cons to both like weight, packaging etc.
      A simple More..

  • What a race that was, shame Williams first win in 8 yrs was marred by this. I hope no one was seriously injured.
