According to media reports, the explosion targeted a police station in
the Bab Touma neighborhood, a popular area for shoppers, that is
inhabited mostly by members of Syria’s Christian minority.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the
blast was caused by a car bomb and that at least 10 had been killed.
Dozens of others had been wounded. The agency said that it was not
immediately clear if the victims were civilians or policemen. Ambulances
and police cars were rushing to the area.
Mr. Brahimi, who also met with Syria’s foreign minister, Walid Muallem
on Saturday, has appealed for a truce between Mr. Assad’s forces and
rebels for the four-day Muslim holiday of Id al-Adha, the Feast of
Sacrifice which begins Friday
