American Navy uses under water drones in Persian Gulf

The Fifth Fleet of the U.S. Navy has started using drones and underwater equipment actively to monitor the situation in the Persian Gulf, first and foremost to destroy mines, says the navy’s press service.

This week, the Kingfish submarine equipped with sonars on both sides was used to search for and discover objects. In July, equipment used to destroy mine blockages was brought to the Persian Gulf. This will prevent Iran from blocking the strategic Strait of Ormuz.

Up to 40 percent of oil produced in the world is transported through the strait.

  • these are made at the Lockheed Martin Perry Technologies plant in Riviera Beach (Palm Beach) FL....this same plant made the underwater car used in the back to the future movie.

They have robot hands that snag the underwater sea mine, and either bring it back to a destroyer, or it optionally (and usually, if its an armed mine) it will attach it own explosive to the mine and detonate it.

  • I am sure that the Navy has been using such devices for some time, yet with the advancement and increase of drone type technology.... it will only increase their operational efficiency. Flip side to it is though, at some point and time, Drone type technology will be widely dispersed for many countries... some of which do not favorably view our country. GO NAVY !!

    • @Koranimal Your assumption is correct.

They have been using AUV's (autonomous underwater vehicles) for well over 10 years now.

For anyone interested in these type of vehicles just Google Hydroid.

  • Isn't it cool how the US funds the defense of those who ridicule and denigrate the nation and yet haven't the capability to step up and maintain their own defenses?

Who draws the line in the sand?
    Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines!
