A spokesman for the Saudi-backed Syrian opposition groups attending talks in Geneva says they received a positive message from the UN Special Envoy.
The spokesman for the so-called High Negotiation Committee said that the group has decided to discuss humanitarian issues before engaging in talks. Government negotiators will meet with Staffan de Mistura again on Tuesday morning. Members of the foreign-backed Syrian opposition groups met with the UN diplomat for the first time on Monday. The warring sides will not hold direct talks and the UN envoy is expected to shuffle between them. Meanwhile, Staffan de Mistura has told reporters that the talks have officially started. He urged other countries to work together to pave the way for serious discussion about a ceasefire on the ground in Syria.
