Just a month before a video camera filmed two human torches racing from a Queens fire that killed four people, the pair had a drunken brawl in the apartment where the fire started, a victim’s roommate testified today.
Raul Palacios, who shared the Middle Village flat with William Salazar, who’s seen in the video racing aflame into a downstairs deli looking for water to douse himself, testified today that Salazar bloodied the nose of Agnes Bermudez, who is accused of setting the fatal fire.
"He jumped on her. He was mad. He was drunk," Palacios said of the May 2008 dustup, which started over a laptop computer.Bermudez fought back, bashing Salazar on the arm and shoulder several times with her shoe, Palacios said, adding that Salazar rued his violent actions.
"He told me he was very sad about it," Palacios told a jury in Queens Supreme Court. "He couldn’t believe he did that to a woman. He told me he never did it before."
He also recalled Bermudez, 50, attacking Salazar inside a club because he was dancing with another girl.
"She started to yell at him, ‘You are nothing. You owe me everything.’ She gave him a slap," Palacios said.
Bermudez, who was horribly disfigured in the blaze, is charged with four counts of murder for allegedly dousing he ex-beau in carpet cleaning solution and igniting him, killing him and three of his upstairs neighbors in the June 2008 fire.
