  • Did the Civil War affect California? Did not know that!

There is an annual reenactment of the war of 1812 near here every year. Its true to life and very interesting.

The one at Black Creek? Yeah, needs more blood, screaming, rape and pillage to make it more realistic, but it is pretty good.
I got married there at the Menonite Meeting hall, said to be the oldest original building still standing in Canada.

PS: No, I ain't a Menonite. Even weirder, the wife and I are just chronic history buffs.

      :)

A little bit. Mostly from secessionists.Officially California was a Union Supporter but often helped both sides. California stayed a Union State(California had the Gold) and had a few Union Garrisons and posts scattered around. Californians did fight on the Union side in several skirmishes out east in a few battles.

  • Like most Canadians, I'm fascinated by that stage of America's development.
As in all "civil" wars, I'm staggered by the incredible savagery they showed to one another.
But in this one? Well, more Americans were murdered in that war than ALL OTHER WARS AMERICA'S EVER BEEN IN.... COMBINED! And that's saying a lot, mind you, because in it's brief history, America's been in more wars than any other country combined.... ever! Staggering, but, seeing how you talk about one another on LL, no More..

    • @michael567 POW camps should never be confused with Concentration camps. Also, Grants drive to the east coast? Wholesale slaughter What?
Did you mean Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea? I'm finding your knowledge of American Civil War history failing.
The very first Concentration camps where both CIVILIAN and Military were imprisoned in the same camp was in the 1900's in South Africa during the Boer War where it was the British who actually imprisoned the Dutch Boers and figh More..

    • @Fire37Rescue

Pulled it from a foggy memory late at night after 4 Guinness, you're right, I was more than a bit off there.
Thanks for correcting me. The slaughter of Southerners during Sherman's March to the Sea was what I was thinking of when I typed of "Grant's push east," but Grant was Sherman's senior officer though, no?
And yes, you're right again, a POW camp, no matter how overcrowded and miserable the conditions, is not a concentration camp.

PS: Other than those two miserab More..

A few errors were greatfully corrected for me by Fire37Rescue.
Pretty sure the first war crimes tribunal was held after the civil war for the way some northern prisoners were miskept in POW camps, too.

      Cheers.
