In September 1996, this vessel landed three North Korean commandos near Gangneung, principally to gather intelligence on the nearby airbase.
The three completed their mission but several days later the submarine ran aground on rocks as
the commandos were swimming towards the vessel.
A fire was set inside the vessel, and the eleven crew & 15 commandos abandoned ship, with the intention of making their way back to North Korea overland.
Thousands of ROK soldiers were mobilised to track the group down, and on the 17th of September the bodies of the eleven sailors were discovered having been killed by the Commandos to prevent them surrendering.
Thirteen ROK soldiers and six civilians were killed by the Commandos over the 53 day manhunt.
One Commando was taken alive, and one is believed to have reached the DPRK.
The majority of the Commandos killed themselves rather than face capture.
A number of the Commandos were discovered to be wearing ROK uniforms, and using M16 rifles.
The same poison compound which killed South Korean diplomat Choi Duk Keun, was found onboard the submarine.

Wonder if the missing NK commando somehow managed to become a defector from this incident - I guess we'll never know.
