A Philadelphia police officer caught on camera punching a woman in the face is set to be sacked over the incident.

A video posted online earlier this week shows Lt Jonathan Josey punching the woman and knocking her to the ground.

The woman, 39-year-old Aida Gusman, is then handcuffed and led off by police with blood on her mouth and chin.

The incident happened during the Puerto Rican Day parade on Sunday.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said today it planned to drop a disorderly conduct charge against Ms Gusman, US network WPVI reports.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey also announced that Lt Josey would be suspended for 30 days "with the intent to dismiss".

Police said at the time of the incident that Ms Gusman had been arrested for spraying silly string at police officers who were conducting a vehicle stop.

The footage shows her holding an aerosol can in her left hand and squirting a small length of silly string towards the officers.

It is not clear if it hits anyone.

Moments later someone else can be seen throwing an unidentified liquid towards the officers which hits them.

Ms Guzman, who is also hit by the liquid, turns to see where it came from — and so does Lt Josey, who strides towards Guzman and knocks her to the ground.

She is then handcuffed and led away, her face bleeding.

"It wasn't me," she is heard saying.

Bystanders appear to react with shock at the violent arrest.

The footage has been viewed more than one million times online and sparked outrage over what was deemed to be excessive use of force by Lt Josey.
