  • I like this individual, he makes a lot of sense, all I can say is that I wish more people thought like him.

  • metaphors are not lies, nor are they historical truths. religions, when used as a premise to bully people or force beliefs systems on people through violence should be rejected and do not deserve respect. if your gods telling you to murder none believers, in your head or through a book, its time to reevaluate your theological path. that said there are universal truths that can be culled from all the worlds religions, when you read them as myth, not fact.

  • Well he just gained a few points back in my book.

Almost lol'd when he wondered why there was even a word "athiest", but that's easy. People are fucking stupid with fragile egos to support.

  • Atheists tend to be as radical as the most radical religious person and are always trying to shove their beliefs down the throats of others.

  • He's right about not being associated with movements. Ive never been a part of one. He almost said the same thing Chris Hedges said about atheists near the end.

  • He's agnostic, not an Atheist.

Tyson is right to distinguish himself in this way, he follows the scientific method as a scientist and educator and his faith in God or lack of faith is not relevant. I have a dislike for organized religion and would "embrace the evidence if its there" - just as Tyson noted. However, I do have faith in a greater being and opt to keep my relationship with God personal and private. And, of course, I believe in free will and natural evolution, not pre-de More..

  • I don't believe in god. Did I have a chance of what I thought as a child when my grandmother insisted that my mother believed what she was told? which in turn made my mother tell me the bogus stories of the bible? No, so the people who talk about being a atheist are just stating their position because most of them were brought up with these silly stories and had no chance (From birth) to give their true feelings and thoughts about what they really think of it. Religious people for hundreds of ye More..

  • Agnostic is a smart position for someone like deGrasse Tyson, who has better things to do than argue for or against the possibility of the impossible.
I'm sure he's an Atheist on the inside ;)

I agree, I know people who have scoffed at Christianity and religion and the belief in God in general, but when shit goes bad for them in life, they head to the church for comfort and answers and start reciting from the bible.
For instance, I have a friend who is a metalhead mosher, all tattooed with images of skulls and death, who ridiculed those who are believers, and lately his chick dumped him because he was unknowingly trying to hit on her friends... Now, he's at the church al More..

      That is true.
Even I might start praying if my aeroplane was falling from 30,000feet or I was sick with terminal cancer.

However, that does not prove God`s existence in any way. It is just a question of clutching at straws when all seems to be lost.

Yes, I have shouted 'Oh God' when I have faced danger, but I have also shouted 'Oh shit' and occasionally 'fuck'!

Each one held the same relevance to me at the time.
