My dad was in wwII and never liked to talk about it. I think I was about 10 and I asked him if we lost a lot of men in the war and he replied: we lost a lot of good men on both sides... Rest in peace pops, see ya soon.

This truly was war, in every sense of the word, in every corner of its meaning. And it was truly a World War. Fought by the greatest generation, on all sides. 60 million lives perished, and in the end we were left with the world we made into what we have today. Such incredible defining moments in time, its final outcome made every thing in this world as it is today.

My fathers ship the USS Bates was sunk after being hit by 2 Kamikaze's on May 25, 1945. He was below deck when he heard a couple thumps. After fighting the fire, he ordered his side of the ship to abandon, and he gave his life jacket to a panicked sailor. About half of the men were lost.
According to my uncle my dad was in charge of the survivor list but he forgot to include himself so my grandmother and aunt were besides themselves for obvious reasons. (My dad always denied this). Later More..

@porsheman For one its good hitler was alive as long as he was and in command, if he would've died earlier his more competent generals would've steered the germans towards victory with ease, especially in the east before it was to late.
