    • @Stovepipe Ceramic tiles that are nearly as good as those that comprise heat shields for re-entry vehicles in space. The outside of the cask is iron but it never gets exposed to the heat. They don't cook the metal from the bottom like on a stove top, it is heated through electricity that is added through two prongs that are lowered into the cask.

  • That was fascinating to watch. Cheers.

Well there ya go....ever heard the saying "so much for the slag heap" or "throw it on the slag heap"

What really amazed me is the containers being able to withstand such enormous temperatures. What are they made of? I'd love to know.

  • Norilsk is also considered one of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world. It is rumored that not a living tree exists within 30 miles of the plant. Google earth it and marvel at the destruction.

    • @grendelak

Sudbury, Ontario looked like that in the 50's and 60's, hence why NASA used to train for lunar missions up there.

Inco's solution was to build the Superstack. It's 1250 feet high and has four jet engines at the base that blasts the sulfur dioxide and other gnarly gases into the jet stream. Out of sight, out of mind.

Scrubber technology is getting much better so the Superstack might be a thing of the past soon.

    • @ZazzMazta Slag consists of elements that are considered impurities in the smelting process. I'm sure nothing here is too harmful and having a dump site like this is probably the only solution. You cannot store it in tanks or it would solidify. So find a small plot of land and put tracks out to it, and dump away.
