Veteran Police Officer Assaulted

The Iowa City Police Department is looking for more information on a man who they say assaulted a 29-year police officer Friday morning.

According to a police press release, the scuffle happened at about 2:10 a.m. near the intersection of Burlington and Linn streets. The veteran officer reportedly saw a man disrupting traffic in the middle of the street.

The officer approached the man nearby at the 300 block of Burlington Street and asked for his license. The man reportedly refused, according to the release, and attempted to run away.

The release said the officer then grabbed the man from behind to slow him, causing both men to fall to the ground. The man maneuvered behind the officer, choking him with his arm. The assailant then ran south from the scene on Linn Street, according to the release.

The suspect is described as a white man in his early 20s, about 6'1" to 6'2" in height with a thin build. He had short brown hair and was wearing blue jeans and white shoes. Before the fight with the officer, he was wearing a dark gray T-shirt. The shirt was torn off during the fight and he ran bare-chested from the scene, according to the release.

The officer reportedly suffered a head laceration, scrapes on his hands and legs and bruising to his neck and throat. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

Video from the police car indicates some people may have been in the area of the crime as it happened. Anyone who may have seen the incident is encouraged to contact the Iowa City Police Department at (319) 356-5276 .

Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is also offering a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the man. Anyone with information about this crime should contact CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477). All calls are confidential and the person who gives information does not have to reveal their identity to receive the award.

  • even though I don't really like cops, I would have helped this officer, and @ least tried to get the guy off him.

  • The law says when the police ask you to stop you have to. If the guy wants to break the law and attempt to run then that is his gamble. He either gets caught and spends more time behind bars, or he gets away. In this case the gamble paid off. I dont think the police officer deserved a beating, but lets face it, when it comes down to it the criminal was just being a criminal, and the police full well know that criminals may run, fight back ect. Its part of the job (for the criminal and More..

    • @Duckmanlivesagain wow, even when I write a comment that has NO opinion on it what so ever you find some way to attack me. Pathetic. You can never win with people like you around, always looking for some way to make the glass half empty.

  • And they wonder why dumbasses like this guy get their asses blown away when they are unarmed. It sounded like that cop was starting to get pretty concerned. He must have had him in some sort of choke hold or something. If I was that cop, and I could have gotten my weapon out, this story would have ended with this guy being shot at least six times and most definitely dead as dead gets.

  • Looks as though that cop deserved to get his ass beat for stopping somebody for completely no reason. He was crossing the damn street... I mean c'mon!

"Disrupting traffic". It was 2:10 in the morning. Honestly how much "traffic" is out at 2 in the morning?

  • I would have tended to have taken the guy out had I came upon that scene. I sure wouldn't have stood there and told him to stop.

    • @mlloyd I was thinking the same thing! And what is up with those 3 dudes coming towards the scene? Why didn't they run after this punk? They could have easily taken him down.

    • @LisaS i bet they were staying back, just like they ask them to do when THEY are whoopin someones ass.

    • @mohawkwarrior27 There's a difference. The cops are usually enforcing the law, the other side is usually breaking it. Just because there are a few rotten apples in the bunch doesn't mean you shouldn't help out, especially when you can hear the cop saying "help me".

    • @chopperharris haha chopper! I live 3 blocks away from this and there's always people walking along this street, no matter the time, as it leads from town to a lot of off-campus student housing for the University of Iowa.
