There is a movie out about what it was like from the Japanese perspective called "Letters from Iwo Jima". Pretty good film.
This footage is excellent, as well.

Yes but the film portrayed the Japs as young brainwashed kids...They had to grow up very fast in those days they were not kids. They were warriors in their own right. Still on the losing end. well done america.

Pfft! Trying to convey non-existent "romantic" qualities of warfare is deplorable. War is sheer carnage and ugliness and trying to mask that by utilizing obvious and artless soundtracks, exposes the epic absurdity of those who idolise and exalt it.
