Caught on Tape: Stockton police beat a Suspect in California While Resisting Arrest

STOCKTON, CA - The beating of a suspect by police officers with batons, was witnessed by dozens of people near a downtown cineplex, including News10 cameras.

Police were detaining Barike Wiltz, 34, because he was intoxicated. A scuffle with an officer began with the suspect and home video, shot by a nearby store owner, shows Barike trying to grab the officer's gun.

The suspect then fled a block away to Miner Avenue where we was beaten almost a dozen times by three officers with batons.

A News10 crew was on the street corner taping an unrelated interview and caught the incident on camera.

"I thought it looked like Rodney King being beaten, it seemed like it was too much," witness Trevon Edwards said.

Police defend their actions.

"The suspect grabbed the officers gun and tried to pull it out of the holster, because of that, we used any force necessary to stop the suspect and make an arrest," Det. Joe Silva said.

The suspect, a parolee, is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of fighting with police and trying to grab an officer's weapon.

  • Good for the cops, they did a great job.

  • You can argue if the police should have used a taser or their batons, but the key thing is that once he stopped resisting, it appears from this video that they stopped their strikes.

  • this dumb fuck grabbed for the officers gun, it is pinata time! And is it just me, or did the news crew only interview blacks as witnesses?

  • Well, while I am the first to point out police malfeasance, they (the cops) are completely LEGIT in this one. Notice THEY STOPPED tuning him up after he was 'cuffed? If they had continued tuning him up after he was restrained, I would call foul, but they didn't, they used as much force as was necessary, and once they had him secured they ceased and desisted.

    100% professional and legit.

  • thank God for the home movie! As for the woman that said, "Day should have just tazed him", and I'm sure you would be bitching if he fell and hit his head

  • Stockton is a shit hole over run with blacks and mexicans and is now bankrupt This what progressive liberal ideas get you!! They have cut the police force to bare bones and there is almost a gang killing every day. So to see the officer act the way they did showed professionalism and restraint.

    • @thebigniv

I almost went to work there when I left Salinas, but chose elsewhere.

While it's gang-infested w/out a doubt, there is most definitely NOT a gang killing there 'almost every day'. Not even close.

  • Tried to grab his weapon? Lucky the bastard didn't get shot as that was what his obvious intent was for the police. If a taser or two had been used, people would have been whining and bitching about that, too. It looks like motherfuckers crying 'Rodney King' will never end. Resist arrest and try taking a weapon and you get what is well deserved.
