The 775 foot MV Rena begins to slowly break-up, and lose it's cargo, whilst aground on the Astrolabe Reef
The container ship MV Rena is now beginning to slowly break up, and has lost over one hundred containers since it struck the Astrolabe Reef on October 6th, '11.
The 775-foot (236-metre) Liberia-flagged Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef, some 12 nautical miles from Tauranga Harbour, for no apparent reason.
The vessel had not reported any propulsion, or navigational issues.
The ship's captain has now been arrested.
