Nice one punch!
I have a few dogs on the ranchito here and they all fall for this stunt.
Except one.She tears right into them and splits them in half.

@Fire37Rescue I fostered a German Shepherd that did the same thing. Took a massive chunk out of the side of a possum.
After shooing the dogs inside I came back to find the possum was gone. Those things are basically rocks with fur & teeth.

@Blech They're like ferrets yeah (not smart enough to realize they're in pain). My retarded neighbor told me he bashed one with a baseball bat and it just hissed at him. Didn't really talk to him after that.
I bet it completely depends on the type of dog. Whether they're visual hunters or not. This dog smelled it, saw it wasn't moving, and went about his business.
Don't know why people hate possums so much... Maybe just because they're ugly. They don't hurt anybody or anything. They're not ath More..

Do they spread diseases or something though?

@Blklight Rarely, and never rabies (they don't carry it). They don't bite anyway. Really have to try hard to get bitten. And I mean, physically pick them up by something other than their tail.
They don't destroy farm land like ground animals. They don't kill pets or wipe out birds or anything... Worst thing they do is maybe cause a traffic accident because they don't know to avoid cars.
All they do is waddle around and look for food, just trying to live.

Pretty damn funny!! I've seen them curl up in a ball before but never just fall over like that. LOL!!
I'm pretty sure my dog Champ would go ahead and "make sure" he was dead. He's a pretty good snake killer and I haven't seen any wild critters anywhere around our property in awhile so he must be keeping them chased away.

Thats awesome! Never seen that. I was waiting for an Aussie possum, and the typical response being "rushing your dog to the vet to out it's face back on".
No shit, I thought the dog was going to cop it.
Tried getting one out my house once, I had to use 3 towels to handle it and the noise it made sounded like a monster of 200kgs weight.

I went out into my backyard the other day to find a possum squirming with it's entrails hanging out. Seems my dog didn't fall for the "play dead" trick. I had to finish the bastard off with a brick.

Does possums make good pets?

@blandadrops I used to have one. They're very funny pets. One of the least intelligent creatures on Earth though.
Playing dead is clearly effective though isn't it? Good little actor. That dog watched it fall over, and still walked up and said "it's dead, moving along".
