Possibly, but the number of people killed, and the manner in which they killed, suggest that the operation was conducted by well-trained individuals. The FSA, while quite resilient, did not have the weapons, ammo, numbers, or tactics, to carry out such an efficient killing at the time.       The army didn't shell for hours.

      The UN confirmed only a very small number of civilians injured or killed by shelling

      The FSA was attacking a checkpoint at the same time, which is why the shelling happened at all.
