Boy dies after hit and run, car flips and lands on top of him.

An 8-year-old boy has died after being seriously injured in a hit and run in southeastern B.C. Thursday.

Dawson Kormilo of Jaffray, B.C., died in hospital Saturday afternoon.

Police say the boy was riding his bike on Jaffray Baynes Lake Road Thursday when a car came speeding around a corner, lost control and hit him.

The impact sent the boy flying into a ditch, where the car flipped over and landed on top of him.

At the time, witnesses said they couldn't believe the driver's reaction.

"The driver came outta the car eating an apple," said one woman. "He was worried. 'Look at my car,' he said to my husband when he showed up."

Volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene, lifting the car off the boy.

"So, four guys give it everything they had to lift that car off and flip it over, so, yeah, definitely some heroics there," said one man who witnessed the operation.

The boy was flown to B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver, where he died Saturday afternoon.

Robin Roo, 54, has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

He is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Cranbrook in November.

Police say further charges could be laid.

"I don't know. It's hard to say this was an accident," said RCMP Cpl. Chris Faulkner. "The driver shouldn't have been on the road, and he was."

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't already spoken to police to call the Cranbrook RCMP detachment at 250-489-3471.

Jaffray is about 550 kilometres east of Vancouver.

  • Awful as this is, there is stuff in this report that just doesn't make sense.

    1. "The driver came outa the car eating an apple." That means that after flipping the car, he grabbed an apple (off the ceiling?), crawled out on his hands and knees holding it, and took a bite upon emerging. This seems a little hard to believe.

    2. An RCMP corporal said "It's hard to say this was an accident." Bad as this was, I've never met a person who was able to flip his car on top of anot More..

"Cpl. Chris Faulkner said the boy was left pinned under the vehicle Thursday evening, as the driver fled on foot."

"Faulkner said a witness pointed out the alleged driver a short distance away, and he was arrested."

So this guy, after hitting the kid, rolling his car on top of him, coming out with apple in hand, and complaining about his car, goes wandering aimlessly down t More..

  • And so, dear Canadian friends, do you have vehicular manslaughter or careless driving resulting in death or reckless enangerment without regard to huiman life?

Personally, the guy should get at least ten years in prison with no possibility of early release.

    • Yes he should. But I'd be surprised if he got more than a year. If he's got a good liar (lawyer) he can serve his time weekends only. I've seen it before & it's sickening. Kill someone with a car & you can be out in a year or less. Even if you're drunk at the time.

We need those kind of sentencing decisions. It's getting better, but nowhere good enough yet.

  • How is it the driver wasn't supposed to be on the road but he was? Had he another prior arrangement he had to attend at that particular moment? Therefore he is excused? He had a dentist appointment he had been scheduled for but thought an apple a day would do the trick mabe?
