PHOENIX - Authorities say a wrong-way driver involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 17 late last month was in the U.S. illegally.
The Department of Homeland Security released a statement Friday stating that Alfonso Valdez-Olea, a Mexican national, had a number of immigration encounters with DHS agencies between October 2008 and August 2009.
At one point Valdez-Olea voluntarily returned to Mexico, then had two "expedited removal orders to Mexico and three reinstatements of previous removal orders to Mexico."
Valdez-Olea was killed in the crash that also killed a 17-year-old Mesa high school student.
Olivia Wilson was the driver of the vehicle struck by Valdez-Olea as he traveled northbound in the southbound lanes of I-17 around 11 p.m. on May 28.
Wilson's passed away, but her passenger, 17-year-old Rhianna Valle of Phoenix, suffered only minor injuries in the head-on crash.
Wilson's family gave ABC 15 News this statement, saying: "Every politician and person who has ignored the importance of securing our border with Mexico shares the blame in our daughter's death."
At the time of the accident, officials with the Department of Public Safety said it was suspected that Valdez-Olea had been drinking.
