is the pilot related in anyway to the cameraman?

The accident happened in 2010 and the pilot was severely injured. The cause of the crash was that water had accumulated in the fuselage during the night, and the pilot hadn't spent enough time pumping it out before takeoff. The water made the plane tail-heavy and it kept pitching up after takeoff. The pilot then reduced engine power and the plane piched up rapidly before stalling and crashing. The accident-report is available online. Google "OH-U567".

@reghat Why have 6 people voted your comment down? I did think the pilot would be lucky not to have spinal commpresion injury

I was in a similar plane accident. On take-off, my wife shifted toward the rear of the plane causing a nose-up stall. She doubled as an inflatable escape chute when we hit the ground.

@Demeter6 Yup that's why checklists ask you to check that seats are locked at least 2 times before take off.

@Bacon&Eggs
FYI: all the seats she was taking up were locked. I take full blame, we should have transported her on a C-130.

musta had the trim or something gone wrong there, weird, dunno how he effed up a very nice takeoff in rather choppy conditions then screwed the pooch.

@WotWot Yup there was clearly some pitch control problems it wasn't something as simplistic as he just pulled up too hard.

@Kalazam
Ya know, almost looks like he maybe left the gust lock on, and because the engine is pod mounted, which means a good bit of trim up and back pressure on yoke during takeoff, then when he realizes he's boned, chops the throttle, which makes it totally pitch up as the "over cg thrustline" goes to nil, damn i wish the cameraperson didn't suck moose.
;)

If it's Chinese it breaks, if it's Russian it crashes.

When a top-mount engine suddenly dies, the loss of thrust causes the nose of the plane to suddenly pivot upward from the drag of the dead motor. This is especially pronounced at high angles of attack such as one takeoff. The procedure when a top-mount engine dies is toimmediately push the yoke forward to keep the nose down, then land as straight and under control as possible.

@Pettit10000
google OH-U567 (the tail number)
The accident was caused because water had accumulated in the fuselage, and was not pumped out. The water then moved to the rear of the aircraft during take-off, and caused the steep take-off angle. The pilot then reduced engine speed, further causing the angle of attack to increase (due to the top mount engine that you described). This lead to the stall / crash.

@RedRocket44 That rotation after throttle is cut makes complete sense to me after reading that. I thought it was pilot error trying to climb too fast and wondered why he seemingly lost or cut power. He did look low in the water before takeoff but I thought it was just the choppy water. Thanks for the info.
