Chip Yates Electric Superbike (commentary)

A member here posted a video recently of his electric motorcycle and a few people didn't seem impressed. Well these innovators should be given more credit. Dinosaur juice isn't going to last forever. Battery tech is getting better every minute. Once weight comes down these things will be a weapon. So in support of these dudes here's Chip Yates commenting on one his first races last year. You must listen to the whole commentary if you're interested in this stuff. Chip is a nice bloke and gives some good info.

  • Fantastic. I really do hope we see more electric racebikes.

I think electric will pwn ICE in the near future. That bike weighs a lot. It makes it difficult in the curves but on the short straights it is king.

I haven't seen a 1/4 mile test of this, have you? That would be interesting. Nothing on their website that I'm aware of.

I know Flip. Which is why I posted this. It has come a long way in a matter of years. The biggest thing now is battery tech. Once they can produce lighter, but higher poer density batteries (or fuel cells) this is the bees knees.

These systems run at something approaching 95% efficiency. Shame we can't produce electricity that efficiently.

  • lot of advantages to electric in certain performance conditions. The only thing holding electric vehicles back is the fact that battery tech is just not there right now. If any one has ever bricked their phones battery they probably know its a pain to deal with because you have to get a new one and there is no way around it, imagine bricking the battery array on a car or bike. You might think it would be a lot more difficult to do but it's really not.

That's not really a problem. Never bricked a phone battery. They're too smart these days. Play Portal 2. It will explain it :)

  • Major advantage of an electric bike is that all the torque is available from 0 rpm. An ICE has much smaller torque available to low rpm even with a gearbox. For those of a technical mind, the bike power is the product of the torque and the rpm at which that torque is produced. The high torque is a huge benefit for accelerating out of curves

You're correct in that torque is what people perceive and often call power. But, they're incorrect, power is defined as the product of the torque and the rotational velocity, all of course with the appropriate units.

Jeremy Clarkson often amuses me with his confusion and interchangeable use of torque and power. Its clear he has no idea what he's talking about

There's more vids on his YT channel. Also check this one where he talks about the front wheel kinetic energy recovery system:
