100 Oregon National Guard Leave Home For Afghanistan
DALLAS, Ore. - One hundred Oregon national guard soldiers and 100 families are all preparing for a year-long sacrifice.
It began with a "Call of Duty" ceremony in Dallas Saturday. For some it's a first. For others, this is a familiar feeling.
One can argue that it doesn't get any easier the second time around.
"It will be tough to miss some of the milestones," said Duffy Cavanaugh,
More..being deployed with the Oregon National Guard. "Missing his first day of kindergarten will be tough."
In Dallas, Governor Ted Kulongoski prepared these men and women for a year of clearing roadside bombs in Afghanistan. The soldiers were honored by veterans of World War II, and supported by their families in attendance. (Watch the video above for KATU's coverage of the event.)
These are Oregonians pulling together as the call of duty draws them apart. These soldiers say that they hope, in the end, they'll be a part of a better country and a better world.
"It's mission first," said Anthony Brown, also being deployed with the Oregon National Guard. "We've been called to do this, so we have to step forward." Less..

This is interesting. When I read "The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict" by Linda Bilmes and Joseph Stiglitz, they talked about how, when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the reason for the late response was because of the lack of National Guardsmen, simply because they had been sent to Iraq in the "Surge" due to the lack of ordinary soldiers.

In the end, Katrina cost the US a great deal more than it should have and the only entity that can be blamed is the US administration and the warmongers within it.

I don't support this, we have enough not being "national guarded" at home, like the border for instance.

did you read me above comments?

It's not their job. It's called the "national" guard for a reason.
Time to stop the wars....
But then the money stops flowing. The media would never let that happen...
(cough) right GM?

Its called "national" guard to differentiate the chain of command that falls under the governor of the state, the Chief of Army can come in if need be. National is just a formality. Each state has their own national guard but ultimately they all fall under POTUS.

Katrina hit New Orleans in August, 2005. The "surge" didn't even start until early 2007.

Ok, but you think only reservists were being shipped out before the Surge? Think again!

Like nearly everything you say, that makes no sense. No troops started shipping out for the Surge until January of 2007, which was a year and a half after hurricane Katrina.
