Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

A total of five US-led NATO soldiers have been killed in road side bomb blasts in eastern and western Afghanistan, as violence escalates in the country.

According to the Italian Foreign Ministry, three Italian soldiers were killed in a road accident in Herat Province in western Afghanistan.

The cause of the accident, which took place near a military base in Herat are still being investigated, AFP reported.

The names of the soldiers have not yet been released pending notification of their families.

Two other soldiers were killed in another road side bomb blast in eastern Afghanistan. No information has been available on the nationalities of the soldiers.

Rome has deployed some 3,800 troops as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Italy has lost some 40 servicemen in the war in Afghanistan.

The Taliban have focused their roughly ten-year battle against the invading US-led forces in Afghanistan on the country's southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar.

The security situation has been deteriorating across Afghanistan over the past few years.

Violence has also spread from Afghanistan's volatile south to relatively peaceful areas over the course of the past year despite the presence of some 150,000 foreign troops.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
