Description & Specifications
The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a ground-launched missile system that consists of surface-to-surface guided missiles with variants containing anti-personnel/anti-materiel and unitary warheads. ATACMS missiles are fired from the M270A1 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers. ATACMS variants can engage targets with Global Positioning System accuracy at ranges well beyond the capability of existing cannons and rockets, and in situations when air-delivered munitions are not available. Operations include Joint Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (JSEAD) and shaping and shielding fires. Targets include air defense systems, logistics elements, and command, control, and communications complexes.
Block I and Block IA missiles have anti-personnel/anti-materiel warheads. Block I has a range of 165 kilometers, and Block IA has a range of 300 kilometers.
Quick Reaction Unitary (QRU) missiles have a 500-pound, high-explosive warhead with a point-detonating fuze and a range of 270 kilometers. These missiles were produced to meet an urgent operational requirement for the Global War on Terror.
ATACMS Unitary Product Improvement Program missiles are in development with a tri-mode fuze (point-detonating, delay, and aerial burst) and an improved 500-pound high-explosive warhead. The Product Improvement Program missiles will begin production in FY09. Program.
Enables early entry and contingency forces to engage and defeat area and point targets in both urban/complex and open terrain at long ranges, via a highly mobile and deployable multiple launch, precision rocket and missile system.
