  • Perhaps people just want too much; people seem to be obsessed with standard of living, rather than quality of life. Eg, people won't holiday in the UK, they absolutely have to have one or two holidays abroad; People won't watch TV on a 23" CRT, they have to have 42" plasma or LED and they absolutely must have SKY; kids wont put up with tesco trainers, they have to have 60+ quids worth of puma; people wont save anymore, they want it now; must have a dyson or vax, and when it breaks thro More..

  • (1) Popular control: To what degree do UK citizens "exercise control over political decision-makers and the processes of decision-making?"

    (2) Political equality: To what extent is it reflected in the exercise of popular control?

Anyway the shit will hit the fans anytime soon but this time will be all around the world

Corruption is rampant. Elections favor entrenched privilege. Corporate power is dominant. Politicians prioritize their interests over popular ones.

  • i'd be nice if you specified at the start what 'this country' is, i assume the UK. the united states, comparatively, has awful health care and women's rights are held as a bargaining chip by one of the two parties for spinning up religious fervor. Among other things. It is the poor and middle class that make the economy run, they use money where they live rather than hoarding it offshore- yet so many vote against their own benefit. • Talking about your politicians reminded me of our politicians.

Forgive me for sounding simple, but if you have many working mothers who earn 200 a week, does that not create a market for child care that costs less than that? Why does no one fulfill that market? For example, let's say a woman stays home and provides child care to four children for 100 a week each. She earns 400 a week, and the woman paying her gets to keep 100 of the 200 a week she earns.

    • @BloodyPeasant

Fair enough. But where I live it is perfectly legal to babysit as a business in your own home, and those who do can undercut the cost of professional daycares.
