Police dash cam,August 10/08:An Oceanside Police sergeant spotted a suicidal woman on a bridge in Vista as he drove on Highway 78 Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Walter McWilson, a trained crisis negotiator with OPD, got off the freeway and went to the woman's aid on the Vista Village overpass. The 65-year old woman had climbed onto an outer railing of the bridge.

The woman told McWilson she was distraught over the possibility of being evicted from her Escondido home, according to Oceanside Police. They say she had written several letters to be sent to the news media after her death.

The westbound lanes of the 78 were closed for about 20 minutes while McWilson and a sheriff's deputy talked with the woman.

The two talked the woman down from the bridge after promising to talk with her landlord. She was taken to Palomar Hospital for evaluation. McWilson drove to Escondido and met with the landlord, according to police.

The rescue happened on the same day a family and the American Civil Liberties Union claimed an Oceanside police negotiator contributed to a suicidal man's death.
