A family is still trying to figure out what
happened after a package was delivered on Friday and 10 minutes later
drug raiders broke in the door. Paul Brown, an architect, was in the
basement of his home when he heard a "huge noise". He headed up the
stairs only to be met by a gun to his face. Brown was handcuffed in his
own home. “They wouldn’t tell us why they were there,” he claimed. After the chaos was over, he was able to speak to his family and figure out some of what happened.

A package was delivered to Paul Brown's home in
Beach Park, not far from Chicago. The package was about 18 in long and
almost two feet tall. The package, addressed to someone who did not
live at the home, was signed for by Brown's son-in-law, Wilmer Aries.
Wilmer brought the package inside the home and left it inside, near the
front door. Ten minutes later, police smashed in the front door and began ransacking the house.“They crashed things, they smashed things,” Brown said.
“You couldn’t walk into a room because everything from the drawers was
thrown around and emptied onto the floor. “The garage door was open.
They could have just walked in,” he said. “They didn’t have to crash
the front door down.”The police found no drugs. They took the package with them claiming it contained marijuana.
Paul Brown never even saw the package that caused the raid. The
search warrant has Brown's address as being in Waukegan even though the
house is in Beach Park. Despite finding no drugs, and a warrant with
the wrong address, the police saw cause to celebrate. Paul Brown watched the police "fist-bumped and high-fived each other in the wreckage of his front door". “I was basically held hostage,” he said.“The door’s ruined and they left my house in a
shambles and they don’t care. Now they won’t return my telephone calls.
They’re supposed to be on our side,” Brown said. He claimed that the
police told him they would not be paying for the damage they did to his
home.Paul Brown hired an attorney, Christopher Cohen, who
made a statement Tuesday. “Unfortunately, the Browns were innocent
bystanders in the war on drugs,” Cohen said.
While the Browns support law enforcement “they do not support damage
to the property of innocent families without restitution,” said Cohen.Paul Brown's 77-year-old mother-in-law lives in the
home with his family. She was in the kitchen when the raid happened.
Brown expressed relief that nothing happened to her during the raid
although she still cannot get her blood pressure down and is afraid to
sleep. No arrests were made.
