  • All because of a half threaded breech plug? Why wouldn't they want to correct this? It makes no sense.

  • Thanks for the heads-up. Up here in Michigan, we hunt with whatever the season allows, bow, gun, and muzzle-loader. There's nothing like a freezer stocked full of venison but not at the risk of personal injury.

  • Looks like he's very lucky to be alive.
personaly I don't like muzzleoaders, I prefer bolt action.

  • Maybe there's more to the story that he's not telling related to a case of Molsons, an extra dash of black powder, and a shout of "Hey fellers!... Watch this!".

    • Sounds like Savage is heading for some big time trouble in the near future. Literally a bomb waiting to go off in their faces.

They should recall the model and take the financial hit of retrofitting the breech plug before they end up with a score of lawsuits involving dead and maimed gun owners.

The only Savage I own is a .22/410 ga. over & under that I've had since I was 12. If that thing was going to blow up, it would have done so 1,000s of rounds ago.

    • Actually it probably will heal in pretty good fashion. He lost no fingers and it appears maybe a small portion of his thumb may have been lost. Losing the thumb entirely would have been very hard for him to learn manipulating even the simplest tasks. That of course depends on the anount of nerve damage done. I can attest to how hard it is not having a thumb for a while after having my right one crushed so hard it split like a bananna in 4 directions. Hope his turns out like mine and heals 100%.

  • The problem with this is that there is no way of knowing for sure how these firearms were loaded. I can't get enough information from the story to form an opinion.
I guess that's where the judge and jury come in.

  • I read this story a while back. I am in no way calling this person a liar, but in my experienced opinion, there has to be more to the story. There are several reasons why. Someone claimed a screw in breach plug. There are many BP rifles with screw in breach plugs, with no problems.
The story on this is just written on a guys blog. Never know the entire story with blogs. Savage is still making and selling this rifle with no modifications or recalls that I can find. This ML, from what I can find More..

    • I agree and thats why I stated Im not willing to place blame on either side without knowing what actually occured. Ive seen peaple at the range "double load" a muzzleloader as well as leave the ramrod in the barrel and then firing it.
