Trooper Nearly Killed During Traffic Stop

A new dashcam video illustrates how dangerous highways can become when motorists fail to obey a law know as "the move over law".

Maryland State Police released this dashcam video of a traffic accident that seriously injured Trooper David Avila during a routine traffic stop along Interstate 70 in June. Trooper Avila was struck by a tractor trailer driving too close to the shoulder then slammed into his patrol car.

The new law requires drivers to move over or slow down when they see first responders along the side of the road.

Trooper Avila is recovering from the accident with several serious injuries.

But doctors say they aren't sure Avila will be able to move his right arm again or return to work.

  • I hope they slowed down the video and got the license plate. what a piece of shit. I always move over. I don't care if its a law or not. I've seen to many of these videos to not know what happens.

  • I love it. I mean the guy in the car was getting out to give aid to the fuzz, and the fuzz gives him a load of bullshit, I bet it that driver had continued to go to help the fuzz, he would have been tazed or shot! The easy solution for this sort of thing, is to NOW stop people on the side of the roadway. Ya wanna give them a ticket-fine, then bullhorn them into driving till they reach a location where they can pull off the hi-way. The reason the stop you on the side, is so they can sit there wit More..

  • Very lucky the rig clipped his cruiser before hitting him, or else I'm pretty sure he would be smeared all over the side of the Santa Fe.
