An oil tanker sank after an explosion, leaving five people dead and six others missing.

Korea Coast Guard said that the explosion of the 4,ton vessel Doola
No.3 took place on Sunday morning near Jawol Island, about 32
kilometers off the port of Incheon.

A total of 11 Korean and five Myanmarese crewmen were aboard the ship and five were rescued.

The coast guard dispatched a team of search and rescue ships to find the missing crew members.

While the exact reason of the explosion is still unknown, coast guard
officials said that it is unlikely to have been caused by any external
shock.

They added that the explosion suddenly occured when crew members were cleaning the oil tank on the deck.

The coast guard assumes that the explosion was likely caused by inflammable gases leaking from the ship's oil tanks.

An official from Doola Shipping, owner of the cargo ship, also said that
the company believes something went wrong during the process of
eliminating remaining gas inside the oil tank.

The cargo ship, which usually carried refined petroleum products and
chemicals, was carrying 80 tons of Bunker-C oil and 40 tons of diesel
oil for fuel.

The coast guard said however, that oil leakage has not been reported yet.
