First Slave owner in the US was black and more history they don't want you to know

-

How many Americans know that the first slave owner in America was a black tobacco farmer? How many Americans are aware that thousands of free blacks in the South were, themselves, slave owners?

Answer: Very few.

Embedded in the minds of Americans is a grand distortion of black history.

Our perception depends largely on activists in Hollywood and revisionists in academia. Add those who parrot Hollywood and academia and you have a broad swath of ignorance prevailing in America.

DailyKenn.com is here to set the record straight; at least in part.

Did you know the following about black history in America?

• The first slave owner in American history was black.

Anthony Johnson came to the American colonies in August, 1619 as an indentured servant. In 1623 Johnson had completed his indenture and was recognized as a free negro. In 1651 he acquired

  • I hear blacks today: "My ancestors were slaves over 160 years ago. That means I can't work, and you owe me a living...or I'll riot!"

  • The whites were pretty much scared shitless to go too deep into Africa. It was easier to toss a few crates of fire water at a coastal tribe in exchange for the slaves they had already taken from constant warring.

  • OK people...here is a cool history lesson. I think everyone by now has suffered through enough black history months to have learned that black "people" pretty much invented everything that has been useful in history only to have it all taken by the white man. Well one things for sure. The first African slaves were actually captured and held to be sold by ..... other black Africans. Now though many may say this isn't possible in that the black man lacks the ability to succeed at anythin More..

  • Black on black slavery is alive and well in Africa today. It's not newsworthy.

Don't see much about Irish slaves (aka indentured servants) in the U.S. or that their survival rates on the trip over and the first few months after their arrival were lower than Black slaves.

Very good point. And there were anti-Irish riots in New York during the Civil War. Northerners were fighting their Southern countrymen over slavery and other reasons at the same time they were killing and lynching Irishmen over Anti-Irish prejudice.

    • @lostonthebeach The Irish were also rioting because of the 'draft'. They were already over represented in the armies of both sides. Early on in the north, people could avoid being in the military by hiring someone (often an Irishman) to go in their place. After about the third round of this people were running out of money so the government started forcing the Irish into involuntary service and they revolted. It wasn't that they minded fighting, it's that they didn't want to be told they had More..

It's alive in the U.S. today. Blacks are enslaved by their black leaders, under the Democratic Party.

  • Africans were instrumental in selling their brethren as slaves. All of the modern day whining about slavery by blacks is simply a cop out

  • Zulu tribes in Africa were slave drivers as well. They were responsible for kidnapping Africans and selling them to European, Spanish and British slave traders who would not only bring slaves to their homeland, but also to North America to be sold.

  • Some good info here.. worthy of further research.
Popular history always paint too black & white a picture (pun intended).
Slave cultures existed in Africa and Asia long before 'white' man got there.

  • Most cultures in history, had slaves in one form or another, and they've all gotten over it - I think it's time the blacks in the US do to.

  • And the biggest lie of them all -- the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all the slaves. It only freed the slaves in the South; yes, there were slaves at the time in several Northern States. I won't even go into that the document had no legal status, since the South was a newly self-declared country.

  • I'm still trying to figure out why "I don't want to know this." As a white guy who took actual history classes in college, I already knew this, and am wondering why this is posted at all in the context of the headline. Is this an attempt to marginalize slavery or civil rights?
