I would never tell a woman what to do with her body :D Trust me. I'm boring like that. But I have been on the case of "when does the fetus become a human being" for a long long time.
I wrote this esse 5 years ago. And that little piece of information of the "nostrils - breath of life, heart - nose" just adds to the picture.
---------------------------------------------
One thing I hope we can agree on, pro or anti choice, is that it's wrong to kill people. If you think it's ok to kill people - kill yourself. So abortion shouldn't be legal when it's killing a human being. The only question is: when does the fetus become a human being?
I think most people agree that a new person isn't created at conception. Life- yes! A new DNA setup- yes!.. but a new person? A human being? Do you go "oh, what a cute baby!" when you see a picture of a few cells? I don't.
Is a new DNA setup so unique and holy that we have to let it develop? Nature, the universe, God, or whatever you wanna call it, creates multiple individuals with the same genetic setup, twins for example. So it doesn't seem to think DNA is so holy or unique.
When does it become a human being then? At day 18 the fetus' heart starts beating and at day 21 it pumps it's own blood type through a closed circulatory
system. On day 28 eyes, ears and respitory system begin to form. By day 42 brain waves can be recorded, the skeleton is complete and reflexes are present. Week 7- thumb sucking. Week 8- all body systems present. Week 9- squints, swallows, moves tongue, makes fist. Week 11- spontaneous breathing movements, has fingernails, all body systems working. Week 16 - genital organs clearly differentiated, grasps with hands, swims, kicks, turns, somersaults (still not felt by the mother). Week 18 - vocal cords work, can cry. Week 20 - has hair on head. Does it sound like a human being to you yet? Would it feel wrong to kill this little being? Yeah, I think so too.
In Finland, and it's probably about the same in many other western countries, women can have an abortion as late as the 20th week. The fetus can survive outside the womb at 23 weeks old. I guess the reasoning there is "if you can't survive on your own you don't deserve to live". Sounds a bit too cold for me.
So if we agree a few cells isn't a human being but a 20 week old is what we're looking for must happen somewhere in between. Is it when the baby can express it's feelings vocally by crying? Is it when all body systems are present? Is it when it sucks it's thumb? Is it when it kicks, moves, tries to breath or when brainwaves are recorded? It could be any of these but I say we should try to get to the earliest event after conception that has any significance, just to be on the safe side. That would be when the heart starts beating at the end of the third week. It's also after this point that the fetus starts looking human.
The heart is associated with many features considered most human. Like love, truth and other corny things. So it even sounds like a very good place to draw the line I think.
But we can't start there. The line is now drawn at the 20th week and we can't expectpeople to decide if they wanna keep the baby at week 3 at once. We have to be realists while we work toward the goal. I'd estimate week 12 to be a realistic dead line as the world looks today. We can demand that people have made their decision by then. At the same time that we start working towards week 3 we must increase sexual education and make contraceptives and pregnancy tests easier to get and more effective.
If we made abortion illegal after the fetus gets a heartbeat we could feel confident enough that we're not killing children through abortion. And still know were doing the right thing by giving women/ couples a reasonable chance to abort unwanted pregnancies.
We should also encourage and teach women to test themselves regularly for pregnancy if they're sexually active, increase sexual education, make contraceptives cheap and readily available and make it as easy as possible for any pregnant women to have a child. Anything for responsible sex and human rights really. For those who get pregnant by accident anyway the possibility to chose abortion should exist in order to prevent unsafe, illegal abortions. I think it's fair to demand that it happens early enough not to be morally questionable with any other arguments than that a conceived embryo, a single cell, has human rights.
I understand it's hard for anyone to make the decision to have an abortion. To not let women trapped in a difficult situation have the right to a safe abortion with proper therapy and counseling wouldn't be fair. Nobody has an abortion and feels happy about it.
Still, if it's a human being it's right to live is more important. I'm following my heart on this one. Most importantly: When it looks like a human being- It is a human being. That's for sure. I also believe the development of what we consider important human aspects, like the brain and the heart, are key here. To be on the safe side we should draw the line at the heart. Religion or science can't solve this for me. I need both to feel confident.
To see microscope pictures of sperms penetrating the egg and all the early development is amazing and beautiful. It's a wonder of nature but I don't feel that much for a cell. It has a new human DNA setup but it doesn't look like or do anything human. It does what a cell does - it divides.
If you're a pro choicer: At least the pro lifers couldn't show us those pictures of aborted fetuses that resemble human beings. I think the pro life campaign would lose a lot of it's steam. If you're a pro lifer: Take a look at a picture of a few cells. Aren't there more pressing issues in this world than the rights of those cells?
When I talk about freedom, reason and compassion I have a hard time keeping to one subject. They melt into each other, come as a package deal as I see it. So for instance I believe we should permit genetic research on human cells, not yet a human being, on the same grounds as abortion. I think most people would feel comfortable with that and all of us would reap the huge potential benefits.
Secondly, if I had teachers like yourself in my high school days, I may have actually paid attention in class. There's a real element of truth to what you are saying and I like the chalk board effect. You should try to include a chalk board in all of your videos. It's a nice touch.
It brings me back to the days when my teacher would call on me to work the chalk in front of the class...
Of course, 30 seconds later I was up there drawing a c**k and balls...

Anyway, good talk Moonshine. Don't be a stranger.
Glad you liked it. Won't be a stranger :)

The fabric of time and space one in the same and inconsistent.. So unless we can fold space, we will never even reach the nearest star alive..
Good luck, humans..
Who knows, maybe some discovery, solution or happening will come along and change the current understanding... it's been known to happen throughout history.
