I've said it a million times:
As a rescuer,if my ass is ever in a tight spot, the first call better be to the United States Coast Guard. I have seen them in action.

@Fire37Rescue These guys are always amazing.
Take a minute and google or bing the Tanker Pendleton off of Chatham Mass. I 'm pretty sure you'll find a link there into the C.G. history of that incident.
It will be worth your time.
One of the greatest tales of heroism to ever come out of the Coast Guard.
(we have done many dives on the "1/2" that sank here)

All 17 crew members are being rescued from a replica of a famous ship that was in distress 160 miles from the eye of Hurricane Sandy.
The captain of the HMS Bounty ordered all members to abandon ship after it lost power and the pumps were unable to keep up with the dewatering.
"The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and life-jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," said the US Coastguard.
The first helicopter has reached the ship and is in the pr More..

@mr-shaft HMS Bounty has sunk near the eye of Hurricane Sandy, the US Coast Guard has confirmed.
Fourteen crew members have been rescued from the replica tall ship - but two are still missing.
The vessel has now disappeared from view, apart from the top of the mast.
The captain ordered his crew to abandon the ship, which was located 160 miles from the hurricane's centre, after it lost power and started to take on water.
The US Coast Guard said the Bounty's crew had donned cold water survival More..

@marinemom I had the chance to visite that ship when she came and berth in the port of Calais, just after the movie was filmed. Great replica.

@tai Mai Shu That's the MSM story.
I personally think they were trying to stay on the western side of the storm and sneak between the coast and the storm which was quite a distance offshore at the time.
We have had numerous boats leave New England leave for southern waters over the last couple of weeks.
Insurance companies now dictate when and how far you can go south on a boat during hurricane season.
I'll bet a few of those companies are eating shit right now as they just gave the go ahea More..

@aussite
They should find out who told these guys to go south and charge them with two counts of manslaughter and make them pay the us coastguard for their costs!!
Surely it would of made more sense to have headed north until it had passed?

@the welshman Never happen. The insurance Companies are covered because they always use those nice risk models and it's kind of late in the year for this type of storm to comes this far North.
We've had the Perfect Storm Halloween storm) some years ago and Irene last year and now Sandy.
This has generally been late enough in the year to make the dash south.
However I think they may have not been sailing but rather under power at the time mechanical failure seems to be the issue.
Unfortun More..
