How to make your own wax slugs.

Wax slugs may be a cheap alternative to a devastating shotgun shell. I would say this is the perfect HD round next to 00 buck and cut shells.

  • I dont know what state the camera man is in when talking about getting a deer with a wax slug, but here in Tenn. Ga, Ohio, Ky. W.Va. That is not legal. When hunting with a shotgun in any of those states that I have hunted in many many times, it specifically says, Rifled Slug. No Buckshot.

These have been around for years, but they weren't originally designed for hunting animals.

  • So is the benefit of these solely the cost savings of buying a box of say 25 rounds of 8 shot vs the cost for 5 deer slugs? I know slugs are expensive, but it seems like a lot of work when you don't need many slugs to go deer hunting with. I also use sabot rounds in my rifled barrel (I have a Remington 870), so I think I would be losing a lot of accuracy trying to shoot these rounds.

It was fun watching the video, though, so thanks for posting.

    • @dirtbiker201 These were designed years ago as a self defense round against humans. Not many states will allow these rounds to be used on deer. They even though held together, are still buckshot. Once that round does hit something it will disintegrate and disperse the buckshot in the area. With this small bird shot, I wonder how bad it would be compared to some I have seen made with #4 buckshot.
I just wonder where this guy in the video is.

  • Pretty cool, I guess the next time I am out of slugs while deer hunting I will pull my emergency candle out and fix me up some wax slugs. That way I don't have to walk all of the way back to camp to get more slugs out of my truck.

Overall it was fascinating, good job fellas.

  • The toothpick is missing from his knife.
    Talk about fragmentation on impact.
That would be like a small explosion.
    Illegal for hunting here.

  • For HD, anyone know how these would do for wall penetration? These are kind of like those Glaser safety slugs I think.

  • If you shoot a deer with standard bird shot, you aren't going to kill it (unless you're 2 meters away or less).

It's going to run away and die a miserable death from the skin infection it gets because you decided to shoot it with ammunition designed for pigeons.

But if you can keep the buck in one clump, then the birdshot will not disperse until it impacts the target.

    BRILLIANT!

  • With these shells in the magazine, do the wax plugs tend to creep forward under recoil?
